What happens when you go Off-Grid with the Linea Micra & Pico grinder into the South Island for a camping trip…

There’s something quintessentially New Zealand about throwing everything into the ute and disappearing into the South Island for a few days. Just the road, the mountains, and whatever you remembered to pack.

For most people that usually means a tent, a sleeping bag, and enough food to get through the weekend. For these travellers, it also meant a Linea Micra and a Pico grinder because good coffee shouldn’t be a luxury you have to leave behind.

The Setup

The Linea Micra is compact by design, built to sit on a kitchen bench without dominating it. That same small footprint translates naturally to life on the road.

It runs on a water reservoir, holding up to 2-litres, which means no plumbing or fixed connections are required. Refilling is straightforward. Just remove the drip tray, top it up, and you’re done. No compromises on where you setup. The Pico grinder sits alongside the Micra without fuss. The whole setup takes up less space than most camp kitchen gear. And don’t forget to pack your favourite locally roasted coffee beans. In Aotearoa we take our coffee seriously and there are so many delicious options to choose from.

The Power Question

The obvious question when you tell people you’re pulling espresso at a remote South Island campsite is: how? This time around, the answer is the BYD ute’s V2L function (vehicle-to-load), which turns the ute into a mobile power station. It delivers a standard 230V output directly from the vehicle’s battery, enough to run the Micra and Pico completely off-grid. No generator. No solar setup. Just the ute.

First Light

The campsite is still quiet. The Micra is already on.

It takes about five minutes to heat up, enough time for the light to start changing over the range. By the time the first shot pulls, the mountains are visible. Steam rising from the wand, mist still in the valleys below.

The Pico was dialled the evening before. The morning is just the familiar process: dose, tamp, lock in, pull. Then milk steamed, and a latte art pour that looks like it belongs in a café instead of on a trailhead.

The Micra’s dual boilers hold temperature the same way on a campsite as they do on a kitchen bench in the city. Consistency is key and the ritual doesn’t change.

Why It Matters

New Zealanders get outside to live better. The whole point of a camping trip is the quality of the experience: the light, the silence, the mountains, the unhurried moments.

A proper coffee is part of that. It’s not a concession to comfort. It’s what makes the morning feel like the morning.

The Linea Micra was built for the home. But as it turns out, home can also be wherever you decide to park.
