This September, we’re excited to introduce Vanguard Coffee as our La Marzocco Roaster in Residence. If you’re a home barista looking to elevate your coffee game, Vanguard is a name we think you should know.

Vanguard Coffee, a specialty coffee roastery hailing from Dunedin, is all about innovation and quality. They meticulously source their beans from smallholder farmers across the globe, then roast them to perfection, ensuring every cup you brew at home is exceptional. Plus, their commitment to sustainability—using eco-friendly practices and ethical sourcing—means you can enjoy your coffee with a clear conscience.

Led by Jason Moore, a veteran in New Zealand’s coffee scene, Vanguard Coffee is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what great coffee can be. Whether you’re dialling in a new espresso or perfecting your pour-over, Vanguard’s beans are sure to impress.

This month we’re featuring their Original Blend; Alpha. Vanguard changes the coffees in the blend seasonally, but always aim to keep a similar flavour profile. A vibrant, yet balanced acidity, medium body, good sweetness and comfort food flavours; think cocoa, caramels, roasted nuts.

The blend is currently made up of a washed caturra from Colombia, grown and processed by Jairo Arcila and a natural processed brazil yellow catuai, grown by Danilo Barbosa.

Recipe.
For maximum balance and clarity we recommend an espresso ratio of 1;2.4 or 20g dose and a yield of 48g out in 25-30 seconds. Faster shots will accentuate acidity and clarity, and slower with emphasise body, texture and caramels.
